Jiu-Jitsu allows a smaller person to effectively defeat a larger and stronger opponent by using leverage, positioning, and timing rather than aggression and brute strength.

At iQ, we practice Gracie Jiu-Jitsu as a complete system of self defense, addressing each of the 5 Pillars of the Art.

 

5 Pillars of jiu-jitsu

1. Standing Self-Defense 

Be prepared for any attack and get fit by learning to defend:

  • Common strikes

  • Grabs

  • Headlocks

  • Bear hugs

  • Wall pins

  • Gun, knife, and other weapon attacks


2. Striking

Understand how to use a variety of strikes in a strategic and defensive capacity, cultivating a deep awareness of punch protection.

  • Hand and foot strikes

  • Elbow and knee strikes

  • Distance management

  • Timing and weight distribution

3. Takedowns and Clinchwork

Effectively and safely manage and close the distance between yourself and the attacker, and bring the fight to the ground using simple takedowns.

  • Clinch control

  • Close range strike defense

  • Foot sweeps

  • Takedowns from grabs, headlocks, and strikes

  • Distance management and footwork

  • Timing and weight distribution

 


4. Grappling

Learn the 6 basic ground-fighting positions and their variations, and become adept at advancing, controlling, submitting, and countering from each of them. The student will come to understand:

  • The positional hierarchy

  • Ground strikes and strike defenses

  • Escapes, counters, and reversals

  • Control, and maintenance of positions

  • Submissions and counters
